The Worst Advice I’ve Ever Heard About Facebook

From the pulpit on Sunday to the water cooler on Wednesday and the park on Saturday you’ve been hearing terrible advice about social media! Don’t worry, you’re not alone. I’ve been victim to this advice as well. My favorite piece of bad advice is that I should deactivate my Facebook page because Facebook is “evil”.

Dr Evil saying Facebook is “evil”

Have you gotten this advice before? Gary Vaynerchuck said it best in this hot ones episode, “Social Media is just a mirror”. If you’re building a business like I am (actually two businesses) you’re definitely going to need social media, especially Facebook! Even if you’re not building a business and want to keep in touch with friends and family in this day and age, you’re going to use Facebook for that. With that said you can save all of your “social media is the devil” talk for someone who might listen…not this guy!

The Facebook Business Model

Let’s talk about what Facebook’s business model is. Facebook’s one and only goal is to gain and keep your attention. In fact, they are so dedicated to that goal that they’ve become completely unemotional about it. What I mean by that is, they don’t care what you’re interested in, they just want to know what it is so they can give it to you and not some other platform.

Facebook: “Oh you like watching videos? Great, let’s build out our video platform”
Facebook: “Oh you like disappearing stories? Great let’s buy Snapchat.”
Snapchat: “No, you can’t have us”
Facebook: “Fine, we’ll build our own disappearing stories and purchase the company that made your filters”

Do you see where I’m going here? Facebook is only interested in gaining and keeping your attention. Once they have that attention they log your behavior so that marketers like me can find you and sell you stuff (true story).

The Negative Content

So why do you always see negative content when you log into Facebook? Honestly, it’s because you secretly like the negativity. Yes, you literally and figuratively like it. Remember the other day when that fight video popped up in your timeline because your friend shared it? Then you watched all 3 minutes and 37 seconds of it? Facebook logged that activity and said, “hmm…I guess Tony likes fight videos. I’ll get him more of those!”

Do you see how this works? Facebook is only rewarding the behaviors that you show it. Facebook itself is an amoral platform. The content that exists there is created by you, the user. If you’re tired of seeing the negative content on Facebook you can do 2 simple things:

1.) Stop interacting with it! Facebook tracks every video you watch for 3 seconds or more,
2.) Unfriend the person that is creating or sharing the content you don’t want to see.

For everyone saying that social media is the “devil” and social media is “evil”, what you’re actually saying is the people you associate with on social media are “evil” and the “devil”. And guess what…you like it! 🙂
