Leadership Starts at Home

Leadership Starts at Home

When raising children it’s easy to get caught up in short term teaching. “Don’t do that!” “Put that down!” “Get that out of your mouth!” I could probably go on for another five pages but I’ll save you from what you already know. What’s more challenging to do is to provide short term teachable moments that will also help them in the long run.

I often lovingly correct my friends and family when they say they’re raising kids or children. After all, that’s not the goal of what we’re doing. In fact, we are grooming adults. We are raising adults to be fully functioning, successful, contributing members of society. That can seem a little knit picky but that slight change in perspective can really change your parenting.

When your daughter posts that disapproved picture on Snapchat instead of flipping out on your child, explain to her why that’s not a good idea and how it could impact her. Have a conversation with her and try to understand her perspective, even if you feel it’s wrong. This calm, collected, EQ Rich approach to handling this situation will not only bring you closer to a solution it will also show a great level of leadership to your adult to be.

We are grooming the leaders of tomorrow, let’s not only tell them the way but also show them the way.
